As it happens, career counsellors have also inherited a deep abhorrence against these three practices. This is why you will seldom hear them recommend anyone to take risks, go for an artistic profession, or choose a path that might lead to unemployment.

Studies have identified a dozen factors that contribute to career success, but so far, nobody has been able to build a convincing model to predict an individual’s future or how much happiness a certain profession will bring him.

Conscious of their inability to foretell the future, most career counsellors have narrowed their purpose. Advice is no longer intended to ensure satisfaction, but to achieve social insertion. Risk is identified as a problem, boredom has become the solution. Sadly, career recommendations based on conventional truth never inspire daring adventurers.

In the year 1820, Bertel Thorvaldsen, an acclaimed romantic sculptor, travelled back from Rome to his native Denmark. Thorvaldsen was then 50 years old and at the pinnacle of his fame. During his stay in Copenhagen, he talked to many aspiring artists, giving them generous advice and encouragement.

One night, when Thorvaldsen returned to his hotel after a reception in his honour, he was told that a boy had been waiting for him all day. Intrigued, Thorvaldsen looked around the hotel hall and found a poorly dressed kid asleep on a chair.

He walked up to the boy, shook his arm gently, and whispered to him “It is late, kid, go home.” Startled, the boy opened his eyes and jumped to his feet. “I was waiting for you, Herr Thorvaldsen, I have been waiting for you all day.”

That must true, thought Thorvaldsen, since the boy looked so exhausted and hungry that he was pitiful to see. “I wanted to ask you for advice on my career,” the kid went on. “I cannot decide whether I should become a novelist or a poet.”

Out of compassion, Thorvaldsen ordered a glass of warm milk for the boy and listened to his story. It was a heartbreaking tale. With adolescence, the kid had lost the striking voice that had gained him some praise and donations in his home town and had turned into one more unemployed youth on the streets.

“This is why I have thought of becoming a writer,” the boy explained shyly, taking three ruffled pages out of his pocket and handing them over to Thorvaldsen. Strange enough, the idea of asking a sculptor for literary advice seemed to fit the kid’s whole pathetic situation.

Thorvaldsen devoted a few minutes to reading the text and was appalled to see innumerable grammar and spelling mistakes. It was obvious that the boy had no chance of becoming a writer. Even if it was cruel, it was better to tell him the truth, so that he could at least learn a trade.

“What is your name?” he asked, returning the pages. “Hans-Christian,” replied the boy full of hope. “Hans-Christian Andersen.” A silence ensued, as Thorvaldsen searched for the least hurtful way to express his judgement.

He stared at Hans-Christian Andersen for a long while as he remembered his own artistic ambitions as a young man, many years ago, but of course, his own situation had been completely different. Thorvaldsen took in a deep breath and shook his head. “Look, Hans-Christian,” he began, “I don’t know how to tell you this.”

At that moment, Andersen nodded and gave the sculptor a crazy smile. That was what he had been waiting for. He was about to hear the words of encouragement that he needed so badly. He was sure that an artist of the calibre of Thorvaldsen would be immediately able to recognize his talent and point him in the right direction.

“What do you think, Herr Thorvaldsen, should I become a novelist or a poet?” he asked again, this time full of confidence. Fascinated, Thorvaldsen looked at the kid straight in the eye and realized how foolish he had been. “I have no doubt, Hans-Christian,” he answered softly, “that you can become both.”

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni created the sculpture Pieta when he was only twenty four years old. This beautiful sculpture was created by a Florentine and was completed in 1499. It is considered a Renaissance sculpture and Michelangelo along with his competitor Leonardo da Vinci were considered than and now as the essence of a “renaissance man”. This sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding her son Jesus Christ in her arms. Pieta literally translated from Italian means compassion and perhaps the idea behind the sculpture is to show Mary’s compassion to her son Jesus. This sculpture is the only work ever signed by the master sculptor; he chiseled “Michaelangelus Bonarotus Florentinus Faciebat” (Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine Made This) across a sash on Mary’s chest after another artist of the era tried to take credit for the work.

This statue was carved from a slab of marble and is currently located at St. Peters, Vatican in Rome. It is created in the Renaissance style and great attention is paid to the holy event taking place. One interesting thing about this sculpture is the Virgin’s youth compared to an adult Jesus. When asked to explain this Michelangelo stated that the Virgin was so young because of her chastity. The detail is remarkable especially the anatomical details of Jesus Christ. Michelangelo seemed to capture the human form perfectly in what he would have thought Jesus would have looked like. You can make out muscle tone, ankles and even tendons in spots. The Virgin’s cloak seems to be folded and creased in just the right spots to create realism. The lines are curved and are not stiff as in the art of the middle ages. Michelangelo’s sculpture is full of beauty and emotion common to the Renaissance period.

The realism and beauty is what attracted me to this work. Michelangelo was the master of creating beautiful art and in my opinion no one has even come close to recreating the amount of beauty in art as Michelangelo has. Pieta’s greatest aesthetic strength is its impact on the viewer. It is a spiritual piece that conveys Mary’s love of her son and her love mankind. She looks at peace despite the fact that she is holding Jesus in her arms. She knows that he is the son of god, will be resurrected and will bring peace to all those who seek him. This piece has one aesthetic weakness and that is Michelangelo’s signing of the Mary’s sash. He did this in a moment of pride and anger when others thought someone other than him created the sculpture. Michelangelo later regretted it, and never signed another work after Pieta. The beauty and the meaning of this sculpture possess lasting value. It is a piece of art that had a lot of significance to Christians than and still does to this day. Culturally it represents the Roman Catholic Church of the period as it was commissioned by the Pope. It still over five hundred years after it was created has an important place at St. Peters in Rome.

Christian music has come a long way from the church-sanctioned melancholy chants of centuries gone by. It has rich history going back several hundred years. In fact, the earliest music manuscripts were of church origin.

When the separation of church and state began, secular music emerged in full force. Some people mistakenly believe that so-called “Christian” music died with this new era. In truth, the church’s loosened grip on music actually led to more diversified styles in Christian music.

Musician Larry Norman was considered a pioneer of Christian rock music. In fact, many still refer to him as “the father of Christian rock.” (Later in his life, the aging musician was tagged with the new tongue-in-cheek title: “Grandfather of Christian rock.”) Norman’s music may have been the anti-Gregorian chant, a fact that made him a criticized figure among his fellow Christians.

Still, Norman managed to gain an astounding following that hasn’t waned despite his recent death of heart failure. His musical talent is undeniable. Those stolid church leaders who would condemn his style needed only to listen to Norman’s songs. His faith in God was unquestionable.

Norman’s artistry flung open the door to Christian rock, as well as other popular music styles. Hip hop, dance, punk, metal, blues and pop-style music has been put to sacred words and ideas since.

Some on the outside of the Christian music scene criticize it all as un-original, carbon copies of secular music. However, a true study of Christian music and its history reveals that Christian musicians have been trend setters. Christian musician Phil Keaggy is regarded as possibly the world’s best guitarist. Even the legendary Jimi Hendrix was known to acknowledge Keaggy as a more worthy musician than himself.

Other artists have managed to make successful from crossovers from Christian to secular music. This seems to demonstrate that their talent transcends religion. Artists like Amy Grant generated fans in both the religious and the secular music industry. Gospel singer Kirk Franklin is another artist who made an impression in both the Christian and the secular market. His first album in 1993 went platinum. It stayed on the gospel chart for an astounding two years. What is perhaps more astounding is the fact that it charted on the R&B charts.

Today Franklin is a respected artist in many genres and circles. The band DC Talk broke new ground in the Christian music world in the 1980s and 90s. It began as a hip hop group, later evolving into a more pop-style group with rap influences. DC Talk managed to win respect in both worlds.

Today’s Christian music scene still burgeons with successful artists making names for themselves of their own rights. Michael W. Smith is a renowned singer, songwriter and three-time Grammy award winner. He has reinvented his career over the decades and is a noteworthy praise and worship leader and recording artist today. Bands like POD, Switchfoot, Relient K, Sixpence None the Richer and Lifehouse have proved that Christian artists can hold their own on the secular stage. Christian music and secular labels alike will undoubtedly continue to turn out high quality recordings from talented artists for many years.

Remarkable and still contemporary statement on Ultimate Concern

Many years ago, about 35, I was talking on the phone to a friend who told me “God is love.” This shocked and surprised me so much that I had to get off the phone. The idea was new to me, a child of atheist parents. Now I find that Paul Tillich in his book, “Dynamics of Faith,” writes of the ultimate concern (God) in terms of love. Imagine that I was so unknowing and ignorant, in a way lost, and presently continue in my discoveries of God. And of love.

Paul Tillich is someone who will help a reader on the way to know and learn about what God is and who he is to mankind. This includes who he is to the individual man or woman. I have started at the end of the book to work my way to introduce the reader of this review to Paul Tillich’s wonderful book.

First, who was Paul Tillich. This from the Encyclopedia Brittanica 2006 Ultimate Reference Suite (the Brittanica designed for the computer):

German-born U.S. theologian and philosopher whose discussions of God and faith illuminated and bound together the realms of traditional Christianity and modern culture. Some of his books, notably The Courage to Be (1952) and Dynamics of Faith (1957), reached a large public audience not usually concerned with religious matters. The three-volume Systematic Theology (1951-63) was the culmination of his rigorous examination of faith.

The writer is a man with a powerful way with words, imaginative gift of communicating theological ideas, and a teacher with a strong mind. His writing will strengthen the reader’s mind and provide means to approach ideas. He says there is “…the healing power of the state of the ultimate concern.” In the last chapter, “The Life of Faith,” he goes on, “The concern of faith is identical with the desire of love: reunion with that to which one belongs and from which one is estranged. In the great commandment of the Old Testament, confirmed by Jesus, the object of ultimate concern, and the object of unconditional love, is God.” This is a book for people who like ideas. We are, each of us, being reconciled to our ultimate concern throughout our lives. This is the dynamic.

Published in 1957 by Harper & Brothers Publishers of New York, this one of a series of books planned and edited by Ruth Nanda Anshen, is a first edition. I do not know what it is worth as such, perhaps a few dollars more than a new copy. I found mine in my Church library, an Episcopal Church. The book is a statement in favor of the Protestant way of faith. He is unabashed in his favor for this way of religion. It is even an argument for Protestantism. Catholics will find this an informative and useful book, even one required as reading in many seminaries. A woman friend who attended Nashota House told me she had to read it when she was a seminary student, though the seminary is Protestant it is part of the Episcopal Church catholic tradition.

The other books in this series by the publisher are part of what was called World Perspectives. I cannot speak to the other works, but this work remains contemporaneous, as you could guess by what I have written so far. Editors in that series: Niels Bohr, Richard Courant, Hu Shih, Ernest Jackh, Robert M. MacIver, J. Robert Oppenheimer, I.I. Rabi, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Alexander Sachs. Many of these names I know, but then these are more of my parent’s generation in some ways than mine (I was born after the Second World War). But though unchurched in their lifetime, my parents were educated people, if just by their own devices: intellectuals and artists.

You’ll find the book takes off right at the beginning. The first chapter is titled, “What Faith Is,” and the first sentence goes: “Faith is the state of being ultimately concerned: the dynamics of faith are the dynamics of man’s ultimate concern. Man, like every living being, is concerned about many things, above all about those which condition his very existence, such as food and shelter.” Not the first to say it, nor the most important, I will add my voice to others and declare the writer writes so very well. It is a pleasure to read for the writing is so good.

This remarkable and brilliant book, I cannot go without praising it again, talks about courage. Paul Tillich finds courage an important ingredient to faith, the kind he explains and extols. He says it is in doubt that we find faith, for faith without doubt is static. We are all with some doubts, and from doubt we grow faith and renew our faith in the ultimate concern.

Not so long a book, but 127 pages, I think a reader will find it edifying. Edifying is a good word for this work. We are destined to have faith, for the writer says we are a species with a spiritual nature and desire. “”Faith sees in a concrete piece of reality the ultimate ground and meaning of all reality. No piece of reality is excluded from the possibility of becoming a bearer of the holy; and almost every kind of reality has actually been considered as holy by acts of faith in groups and individuals”– a graceful book.
