Every magician knows that there are three tricks that he should never perform in public: predicting catastrophes, letting wild animals free, and making food disappear. Through the years, these three arcane superstitions have become anathema to anyone working in the field of divination.

As it happens, career counsellors have also inherited a deep abhorrence against these three practices. This is why you will seldom hear them recommend anyone to take risks, go for an artistic profession, or choose a path that might lead to unemployment.

Studies have identified a dozen factors that contribute to career success, but so far, nobody has been able to build a convincing model to predict an individual’s future or how much happiness a certain profession will bring him.

Conscious of their inability to foretell the future, most career counsellors have narrowed their purpose. Advice is no longer intended to ensure satisfaction, but to achieve social insertion. Risk is identified as a problem, boredom has become the solution. Sadly, career recommendations based on conventional truth never inspire daring adventurers.

In the year 1820, Bertel Thorvaldsen, an acclaimed romantic sculptor, travelled back from Rome to his native Denmark. Thorvaldsen was then 50 years old and at the pinnacle of his fame. During his stay in Copenhagen, he talked to many aspiring artists, giving them generous advice and encouragement.

One night, when Thorvaldsen returned to his hotel after a reception in his honour, he was told that a boy had been waiting for him all day. Intrigued, Thorvaldsen looked around the hotel hall and found a poorly dressed kid asleep on a chair.

He walked up to the boy, shook his arm gently, and whispered to him “It is late, kid, go home.” Startled, the boy opened his eyes and jumped to his feet. “I was waiting for you, Herr Thorvaldsen, I have been waiting for you all day.”

That must true, thought Thorvaldsen, since the boy looked so exhausted and hungry that he was pitiful to see. “I wanted to ask you for advice on my career,” the kid went on. “I cannot decide whether I should become a novelist or a poet.”

Out of compassion, Thorvaldsen ordered a glass of warm milk for the boy and listened to his story. It was a heartbreaking tale. With adolescence, the kid had lost the striking voice that had gained him some praise and donations in his home town and had turned into one more unemployed youth on the streets.

“This is why I have thought of becoming a writer,” the boy explained shyly, taking three ruffled pages out of his pocket and handing them over to Thorvaldsen. Strange enough, the idea of asking a sculptor for literary advice seemed to fit the kid’s whole pathetic situation.

Thorvaldsen devoted a few minutes to reading the text and was appalled to see innumerable grammar and spelling mistakes. It was obvious that the boy had no chance of becoming a writer. Even if it was cruel, it was better to tell him the truth, so that he could at least learn a trade.

“What is your name?” he asked, returning the pages. “Hans-Christian,” replied the boy full of hope. “Hans-Christian Andersen.” A silence ensued, as Thorvaldsen searched for the least hurtful way to express his judgement.

He stared at Hans-Christian Andersen for a long while as he remembered his own artistic ambitions as a young man, many years ago, but of course, his own situation had been completely different. Thorvaldsen took in a deep breath and shook his head. “Look, Hans-Christian,” he began, “I don’t know how to tell you this.”

At that moment, Andersen nodded and gave the sculptor a crazy smile. That was what he had been waiting for. He was about to hear the words of encouragement that he needed so badly. He was sure that an artist of the calibre of Thorvaldsen would be immediately able to recognize his talent and point him in the right direction.

“What do you think, Herr Thorvaldsen, should I become a novelist or a poet?” he asked again, this time full of confidence. Fascinated, Thorvaldsen looked at the kid straight in the eye and realized how foolish he had been. “I have no doubt, Hans-Christian,” he answered softly, “that you can become both.”

Christian worship materials and references?

I would appreciate any worship music resources that you have. I am in a new(as in just beginning) church. We are about to start up a youth group and I have a heart for leading the worship. Contemporary and Traditional is great.

Any websites or recommended books would be a great help.

worshiptogether.com is great… there is free sheet music and even video workshops with song writers.

worshipmusic.com is a great store to find new worship releases and sample tracks.

PaulBaloche.com is the personal site of Paul Baloche, the writer of Open the Eyes of My Heart. His site has song charts and lyrics on it, as well as amazing instructional DVDs that I highly recommend (I have them all and have passed them along to people in our youth band).

SoulfulProductions.com is a company that makes great instructional DVDs for worship musicians. Their DVDs are more in the contemporary Gospel style and are endorsed by Kirk Franklin and Martha Munizzi to name a few.

ChristianGuitar.org has a whole bunch of free worship chord charts which will help you prepare for rehearsals.

In addition, always go into a rehearsal with a plan. For instance, a rehearsal setlist.

One primary thing you’ll do is look for good songs that the youth can use to connect with God. I highly recommend these albums, because the songs are so usable in a youth group setting:

i know this one kid from school, his parents dont let him listen to music that isnt christian cuz his parents think its bad and worldly and his church also thinks its a sin, he isnt allowed to dance either, and when he started going to the boxing gym his parents didnt let him go anymore cuz they played music while the boxers trained

Artistic and expressive describe the Senior Portraits of today.

From a senior’s point of view … this is one of the super-important portraits of their lives. And they want it to express WHO they are, not just a headshot in front of a white/black background. They want their “sparkle” to show through. They want the “WOW” factor that makes them look like a million bucks.

Cats and dogs are tattooed on their ears so that owners could identify them. Branding is similar to it but it does not insert ink in the skin.

In the field of cosmetics, tattooing is used when there is a want for permanent make-up or to hide a discoloration of the skin. Permanent make-ups such as eyebrows, moles, lips or eyeliner come in natural colors to resemble make-up.

Tattooing is also applied in the field of medicine wherein instruments are marked especially in repeated application of radiotherapy and for the areola in some breast reconstruction procedures.

Tattoos gained a lot of popularity thus paving the way for improvements in its application. Many celebrities sport tattoos on their bodies. Tribal tattoos declined because of the spread of Christianity since it was considered as a pagan activity.

Recent survey shows that about 24% of the youth have tattoos compared to older people. Men and women are relatively equal in terms of who gets more tattoos.

Tattoos are also associated negatively in some things. In Japan for example where it is associated to the Yakuza. Many public places bear tattoos in an attempt to prevent the Yakuza from entering.

In America, the inmates have tattoos that symbolize their offenses. A tear for example would represent murder, one tear for every friend who died. In the armed forces it symbolizes the number of kills or the number of units in a certain battle.

There is no consistent Christian position in tattooing. The Jews are strongly against it as it is stated in the bible. Although tattoos of Christian symbols are common, in Islam, tattooing is strictly forbidden. They believe that they are destroying the creation or Allah through it. Judaism also forbids the practice since they do not conform to body modification without medical reasons.

Tattooing as a process is through inserting a dye in the skin’s dermis. Although now in the modern times there is a tattoo machine which inserts a group of needles in the skin.

Tattooing also carries with it health risks such as infection or allergic reactions. Sanitation especially in the needles must be observed.

Permanently done tattooing can also be removed through laser treatments fully or partially. However the expense and the pain is far greater than applying it.
