Where am i going and what should i do?

I have been playing piano for about a year with lessons, they were fun, but i moved and got a new teacher who tells me my old teacher taught me it wrong, so i have to learn all over again…
Honsetly, my father dosent want that bcz well im not like super serious about piano, i do it for fun+pleasure. not bcz i want to major in music or play for church or anything.
I would love to continue doing piano but my father is seeing about me to stop playing piano bcz he says i need a goal or something to work towards. (to get better at).
What should i do? Quit lessons? What kind of goal could i have?
Also where can i find some free sheet music online? Maybe i could try doing some of that by myself.?

Need a silly or funny valentine’s day or love song…?

We’re having an “open mic night” for the sign language department. We have a lot of newbies who hesitate to get up in front of anyone. At Christmas, we picked people out of the audience and gave them one of the 12 Days of Christmas lines, and they had to do something to their part.

We want to make people do something to a song again, and this open mic night theme is Valentine’s day. It can be any sort of love song. For some reason, I keep thinking there’s GOT to be something out there. When I was a kid I had a record that had all those crazy songs like Wooly Bully and Tan Shoes With Pink Shoelaces, and Yakkedy Yak. I thought maybe there would be something along those lines. As the soundman and projectionist for my local church, I found it to be frustating and time consuming when searching for a particular song among all our cds for choir practice. I was determined to sit down at some point and catalog all those songs and cd’s. I took some time to search the Internet for a simple, free database I could use for this purpose. I even considered creating my own database but never quite got around to it.

One evening during choir practice, as I was searching for a particular cd, a friend stopped by the sound booth and made an interesting suggestion: rip all the songs from the cd’s and save them to my projection computer. The idea sounded entirely plausible. Not only could I have the individual songs available in alphabetical order, I could also play them through the sound board via the computer’s audio out and eliminate our stand-alone cd player for this purpose.

I gathered up several cds, took them home, and ripped the songs from them. It was at this point I had to use a little creativity – here’s why. The choir’s practice cd’s are recorded in a different fashion than a typical music cd. Each track is recorded with two mono channels – vocals on the right channel and instruments on the left. This allows the choir to hear how the song should be sung with or without music, or to practice (and perform) with music only; simply by shutting off one channel or the other.

Also, each song is divided up into sections, each one being a separate track. In other words, the first song on the cd might be composed of tracks one through seven, the second song tracks eight through fourteen and so on. This allows the choir director to go back to a specific point in the song and start again in order to work on a troublesome area.

To record the cd’s, I would rip all the tracks of a single song and save those tracks (in MP3 format) in a folder with the name of the song title. Then I’d do the same with the next song. I placed each individual song folder into a master “Choir Songs” folder. Of course, this all took some time, but so would have cataloging all the songs and info into a database.

Then I ran into a problem. Not being very familiar with media players I was determined to find one that was small and easy to use. After finding one I liked, I installed it on the pc and simply dragged the song folder into the playlist window. By double clicking the first track the song began to play as it should. The problem occurred when changing tracks. Since each track contains a section of the song, there needs to be a smooth, undelayed transition between tracks in order to have no interruptions in the song. Unfortunately, this wasn’t happening. There were burps between the tracks that I couldn’t remove even by changing the buffer settings in the player. After more searching I found another media player with a buffer ahead setting that played the song perfectly.

Since I am responsible for the sound as well as the projection of the songs’ words on a screen for the choir to read, this is an excellent setup for me. I can have the projection software and the media player both running on my computer’s desktop screen. I click the play button to sart the music, then use the keyboard to advance the slides with the song lyrics.

Initially, I had some concerns about the sound quality I would get by playing MP3 files through a computer sound card, then through the mixing board. After hearing the results I can tell you that I was very pleased. The sound was crisp and clear and the reduced quality of the MP3 file was not distinguishable.

Obviously, there are hard drive recorders/players on the market that are designed for these kinds of audio applications, but they are somewhat expensive. If you already have a fairly powerful computer in place for projection, this method costs nothing (except for a cable and some adapters to run from your audio card to the mixing board). Give it a try.

Most modern musicians take sheet music for granted. Sheet music abounds in printed form and can even be downloaded from the Internet. It’s a far cry from the days of oral tradition. Centuries ago, there were few ways to pass on music other than to “hum a few bars” until the listener caught on.

The available manuscripts had to be painstakingly marked out by a transcriptionist and were limited in number. In fact, while many songs were known on a wide scale, they were likely spread about by travelling minstrels and troubadours. They were certainly not available in printed form at the local music shop.

Prior to the invention of the printing press in the mid 15th century, very few private citizens owned or had access to sheet music. The ones in existence were owned by a few wealthy noblemen. Because the only way to publish written music was to copy it by hand, it’s little wonder that sheet music was scarce.

The process took long hours and careful copying skills, plus access to the right materials. Before the printing press, the only songs available in written score were sacred songs. Most of these were chants used in liturgical services. Virtually no secular music scores existed prior to the 15th century.

The invention of the printing press in 1439 changed the history of sheet music. This is in spite of the fact that the earliest methods of reproducing musical scores were almost as painstaking as copying music by hand. Italian printer Ottaviano Petrucci may be considered the “father of sheet music.”

He developed the first method for reproducing sheet music. He was also granted an exclusive patent for his work, giving him an early monopoly on the business for several years. His method involved three stages. The paper was pressed three times. First, the staff was printed. On the second impression, the words were added. The final impression laid down the notes.

The downside to the process was that it was time-consuming and expensive. This made it relatively impractical for the average citizen to own sheet music. However, technology evolved over the years. Eventually, better and more efficient methods of printing were developed.

Most of the earliest music that was published was sacred music. In fact, the printing, distribution and publication of music were largely controlled by the church for several centuries. Eventually this changed, and soon music companies found themselves in the thriving business of music publishing. The retail distribution of sheet music took off in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This was in spite of the fact that there was no means for promoting particular songs or artists, like radio or television.

The popularity of sheet music prompted many governments around the world to examine the issue of copyright and pass their own laws in that regard. With copyright becoming a worldwide issue, the Berne Convention of 1886 established a universal principle regarding copyright. Today, approximately 76 countries around the world adhere to this standard.

Of course, technology continues to evolve. Radio, television and the Internet have posed new challenges to the ability of governments to enforce copyright laws. Sheet music can now be downloaded straight from the Internet, often illegally. Notwithstanding this, the annual sale of sheet music ranges in the tens of thousands today. Music-publishing software has brought the printing of music full circle from the days when stolid monks sat writing music with a quill by candlelight.

Music courses offered by colleges are generally far more in-depth than other music courses and are usually only available to degree-seeking students (though some colleges offer music courses as part of their continuing education programs). Lower level college music courses often focus on an amalgamation of music theory and history, teaching individual theory concepts based on the historical period to which they are particular. As the music courses grow in skill level so too does the number of specialized topics. Advanced music courses are available for nearly every historical music period and are sometimes based on one particular movement. Advanced music courses for theory grow increasingly more difficult and slowly teach every detail found in modern music theory; it’s during the theory music courses that students intending to major in music have their skills challenged the most — some even refer to these music courses as a weeding out period.

Instrument-based music courses are equally as tough at the college level, though they usually assume a working knowledge of the instrument before the class begins. Those wishing to learn an instrument, therefore, are better off with private music courses or music courses offered by a community orchestra or social group. These music courses will focus on the basic details of learning an instrument, starting from the very beginning. Fingering, theory and music reading will be covered, in addition to the occasional bit of history. Students of these music courses may then wish to move on to college-level music courses after completing a few years of private instruction.

But for those more interested in “recreational music” – in other words, music that is played for personal enjoyment or to entertain family and friends, college music classes are not at all necessary. The internet abounds with wonderful courses that will help you do everything from play at your church to accompany your child on their flute or trombone, or even play in a jazz or rock or fusion or country group. Dance Music – Live Band Or DJ?

After dinner, it is traditional for the bride and groom to have their first dance as husband and wife together.  Music that is played at the dinner reception is usually dance music that will allow everyone to join in.  You can either hire a live band or a DJ to play records.  A live band will often cost more money, but many couples prefer them over a DJ.  A DJ will spin records.  Both will expect to be paid up front and will take requests.  If you have a list of songs that you would like to be played at your wedding, you should give them to the band or DJ prior to the wedding. 

You have many choices when it comes to music for your wedding.  You can choose more than one type of music to entertain your guests as well as celebrate this event.  Be sure to look into all of your options, get references and hear them play before you book any musicians for your wedding.
